The Toyota team are waiting until Sunday morning to get an update on Timo Glock's condition following his qualifying crash before making a decision as to whether or not he will be able to take part in tomorrow's Japanese Grand Prix.
Glock left the track at the final corner during the second part of qualifying earlier today, spearing straight into the tyre barriers. Although he removed the steering wheel immediately, he remained in the car for a number of minutes before medical teams were able to extricate him from the wrecked Toyota.
Initial reports from the track hospital said that he had suffered a wound to his leg and was complaining of back pain, but later on Toyota boss John Howett said that Glock's injuries were relatively light, and that the team hoped the German would be able to take part in the race.
"I don't know, we have to wait and see," Howett said when asked about Glock's chances of taking part in the race, "Obviously he didn't feel too good today and we have to wait until tomorrow morning, but we hope so.
"As far as we know, he's fine. They've x-rayed his back because he felt a bit of a pain [and it showed] nothing at all.
"They x-rayed his leg and we're waiting to see, but it doesn't seem to be anything. He's got a scratch down the back of his leg, not too deep but reasonably long. It's precautionary – there's absolutely nothing wrong with him."
Howett also confirmed that the accident seemed to simply be driver error, with Glock on a quick lap at the time that he went off.
"There's absolutely nothing we can see on the data or mechanically on the car so I can categorically say that we don't believe there's any issue with the car," Howett explained, "He was on the edge, he was pushing for time, two green sectors, if the car had bitten and gone he'd have probably would have got across the line."
Toyota are working on a contingency plan should Glock be unable to participate in the race, involving drafting in their reserve driver Kamui Kobayashi.
The current regulations state that no driver who did not take part in Saturday's practice session can start the race, but Toyota will look to gain dispensation to run Kobayashi because the Japanese man competed in the Friday practice sessions (such as they were) after Glock sat them out with a sniffle.
The attempt to gain special dispensation will be hindered by the fact that both Friday sessions were run in wet conditions, meaning that Kobayashi would not have lapped Suzuka in the dry prior to the race.
"If Timo can't, he will do," Howett boldly predicted on Kobayashi's chances, "It's a slightly grey area as to whether or not he can.
"The stewards probably can give us a force majeure reason to compete, but I have to say he didn't run today so we have to wait to see what they say."
