Cosworth happy with early engine form

Mark Gallagher, the manager of Cosworth's new F1 project for 2010, has expressed his satisfaction with the early running of their new engine, after their new CA2010 unit came through the Valencia test with no real problems.

Cosworth are returning to the Formula One grid for the first time since 2006, supplying the four new teams, USF1, Campos, Lotus and Virgin Racing, with engines, along with Williams.

And Williams gave the engine it's first proper track time earlier this week at the three-day Valencia test, the team coming through the session without any major problems with the engines. Though the team spent most of the time near the foot of the times, they were believed to be concentrating on heavy fuel runs.

And Gallagher said that he was pleased enough with the initial test of the engine, which saw the engine complete over 1000km of track testing.

"Our work with Williams has been very important in order to collect data, driver feedback and to gauge the initial results from the marriage of the new CA2010 engine to the all-new FW32 chassis," he explained rather boringly.

"Our first measure of performance was always going to be durability and the fact that Rubens [Barrichello] and Nico [Hulkenberg] completed over 1,200kms between them showed that engine reliability has been in line with our expectations.

"We also looked at the overall success of the installation, seeing how the engine works together with the Williams transmission and checking all associated systems, pressures, cooling, temperatures."

He added that: "From a human point of view, Valencia was the first time that our dedicated team of track support technicians and engineers worked as an integrated part of the Williams team, which is a key aspect of the working relationship, so in that regard it was an important milestone.

"We now look forward to next week's Jerez test where we can take our technical programme with the team to the next level."

The Jerez test will see Virgin Racing, also using the Cosworth unit, begin their own pre-season work.
